March 10, 2011 - Going Coastal

Tomorrow morning we are going to a hotel on Diani Beach (Mombasa) until Monday afternoon. Even though we have lived here for nearly 3 1/2 years, I have never been to the beach. I am DYING to take a dip in the Indian Ocean and watch the sunset from our little cottage. As I told Grace yesterday, even though she will (hopefully) have a lot of fun...this trip is really about ME!

And I discovered tonight that packing to bring two small ones to the beach for 4 days is just about equal to packing to go on home leave for 4-6 weeks! Shouldn't we just need bathing suits for this adventure? And diapers? And sand toys? And mosquito nets for the babies? And bug stuff? And sunblock? And car seats? And snacks? And Noah's can't-live-without bouncy seat? You get the idea.

Keep your fingers crossed that we have a WONDERFUL time on the beach and that nobody comes back with malaria :) Until next week...

March 8, 2011 - Going Gaga for Giraffes

The day after Grace's birthday, we went to visit the Giraffe Center. Grace had been two times before, but of course has no memory of those visits and my parents wanted to see the giraffes again. We thought Grace would love feeding the giraffes and we were right. She especially liked to pick up the pellets of food off of the ground to feed them with Kristoffer. It was really cute. Noah slept through the whole thing, surprise surprise! We also had a wonderful lunch afterwards at a great restaurant called Talisman. It was a lovely day and my mom captured some sweet moments (my belated blog is not a reflection of the day, but of the fact that I just downloaded the pictures from my mom's camera).

March 7, 2011 - Grace's 1st Haircut

It took 2 years and 8 days for the moment to arrive, but yesterday afternoon, Kristoffer, Noah and I took Grace to get her first haircut. We explained everything ahead of time so she was prepared and she recently watched me get my hair cut so she had a visual in her mind of what was going to happen. I think we made a good decision to take her to the lady who cuts Kristoffer's hair and not the lady who cuts my hair (for a variety of reasons...long story there). I wanted to videotape the experience but Noah was a bit fussy at the exact same time so that couldn't really happen. I held Noah and the digital camera, Kristoffer held Grace. She was so brave and didn't cry or squirm at all. The hair lady was extremely sweet as well. Grace might not look thrilled in the pictures, but when we stepped out of the shop she exclaimed, "I'm so pretty!" Granted, she didn't have THAT much hair in the first place, but her mullet was getting pretty crazy in the back and we think that by chopping it off we gave it freedom to grow faster (and hopefully curlier!). If I hadn't been somewhat distracted with Noah, I probably would have cried as my daughter's baby hair was cut off. And, yes, I did save that first little curl for her baby book. And yes, okay world, I get it now. She's really not a baby anymore!

March 6, 2011 - "ELMO P"

Grace can officially sing her ABCs in English and I am extremely proud. This video might not be her most accurate version of the song but it is the only one I have managed to capture on video and it might be the cutest anyway. I particularly like that when she gets to "LMNOP" it sounds like "ELMO P" (it is quite appropriate given her love for Elmo). Not bad for a 2-year-old!

March 5, 2011 - Six Weeks Ago

At 20 minutes old, this is not the first video we have of Noah (that was at 1 minute old), but six weeks after his birth it is still my favorite to watch. I love listening to Kristoffer talking to him and to hear the sweet things he tells our son: you are so beautiful, we've been waiting for you for such a long time, I wasn't sure I would get to see you [because of all the complications in the pregnancy], welcome to the world, Noah...welcome to the world.

March 4, 2011 - Baby Love

Today Kristoffer and I witnessed the greatest moment we've had since Noah was born. Noah was lying on his stomach and, completely on her own without any prompting or encouragement, Grace randomly walked over, lay down next to him, and gave him a hug. "Big hug to Noah," she said, as she was lying there with him.

My heart was instantly a puddle of love watching my two babies. Nobody was crying. Grace was not banging her head against a wall or biting her fingernails. Nobody wanted my attention or to be held. And then I could see it, for just a moment, that the two of them really will be best friends some day. I could see it so clearly and was completely happy about having two children so close in age.

Thank you, Grace and Noah, for giving us that moment. I am glad I had my camera close by, although it is a picture that my heart will never forget.

March 3, 2011 - An Apple a Day

Grace and Noah had back-to-back doctor's appointments yesterday: a 2 year check up for Grace and a follow-up for Noah from his illness.

Grace did MUCH better than anticipated, given her previous track record of absolutely hating everything about going to the doctor. She only cried when she was weighed and measured and was actually very sweet with Dr. Nesbitt. We discovered that she gained a teeny-tiny amount of weight in the last few months, so now she weighs 9.3 kg (20.5 lbs). Still a petite little thing, but at least she remains in the 25th percentile for her height and the 75th percentile for her head circumference. As the doctor said, it is a relief that developmentally she is doing so great despite her poor weight gain. We are (once again) re-evaluating our strategies to encourage Grace to eat. Otherwise, the doctor thought she seemed very healthy!
We also had Grace's parent-teacher conference last week at school. Ms. Mbata had a lot of nice things to say about Grace. She likes to ride the horse at school on Mondays, she likes to do anything art related and has gotten more involved in their gym class. She is enjoying swimming every week too. The theme with all of these activities is that Grace likes to do things in her own time and doesn't want to be rushed by anyone (no surprise to us). She is ALWAYS singing, according to her teacher, and they even say she provides background music when everyone else is quietly playing. Apparently Grace is pretty discerning about her social life. There are several children that she doesn't seem to like, and some that she does. She has one "best friend", a Kenyan boy named Andrew, who she hugs and holds hands with. He is the only child that she seeks out to play with. Mostly she plays alongside the other children. Ms. Mbata said the things that they are "working on" with Grace are EATING (see above) and joining other children to play with them. Grace knows everyone's name and where their school bags are hung and which shoes belong to which child. So funny! It was really interesting for us to hear another adult's perception of our child when we are not around.

Now on to Noah. At 5 1/2 weeks old, he weighs 4.8 kg (10.5 lbs) which is 50th percentile (he gained 1 kg since his birth weight). He seems so big to us now! He is 55 cm long, which is about an inch longer than when he was born. Dr. Nesbitt is very pleased that Noah made such a full and complete recovery from the virus (or infection) he had a few weeks ago. He got a clean bill of health and goes back in 2 weeks for some vaccinations.
What else is new with our newborn? Well, Noah seems to love being on his stomach. Maybe he would sleep all night that way if we let him (we don't dare) but we're just letting him take supervised naps that way for now. He was given a new play gym (see picture) by some friends and seems to like the music that accompanies it. He wants to be in motion if possible so he loves his bouncy seat (and we do too!) or being in the car. I wouldn't classify him as a colicky baby, but for the last week he definitely has a very fussy period in the evening. He can be comforted for a few minutes here and there and he will eat and burp off and on, but he is also crying and uncomfortable for quite a bit of time (this is when the bouncy seat seems to be the only remedy!). He is starting to smile a tiny bit, he can follow a finger with his eyes, and...are you ready for this?...he can roll over from being on his stomach to his back. Yup. He's done it 4 times (the first two times we thought it was because of a slope in the sofa, but then he did it on a flat hard mattress as well!) and we have all been very impressed.

All in all, not such a bad report on these two little ones.

February 26, 2011 - Two-year-old Monkey

Grace had a "monkey" birthday today! It is very hard for us to believe that she is already two-years old. Here is a little bit about her day...

She woke up at 5 am and was happy to play with Far upstairs (and eventually Mama and Noah) before going downstairs for her birthday.
She was very happy to find a decorated downstairs with many balloons and many birthday presents!
She really loved her birthday train. Grace has been good at telling people that she is two now!
At 10 am we met up at the pool with some of our friends (10 kids + 4 infants + 16 parents + 2 grandparents!) for Monkeynastix! Grace had a good time in the beginning but then got a little bit overwhelmed by everything going on. It was a beautiful but very hot morning so after Monkeynastix we moved down to our house.

At home Grace got to eat her monkey cake. It was a tough transition from the poolside to our house because when we came home all the kids started playing with Grace's toys and she wasn't quite prepared for sharing with so many people. After a brief meltdown she recovered and we had a nice time with our friends.
Noah was pretty much like this with Nene all day.
Grace's friend Hayley was really making her laugh for a little while. I was happy to catch a big smile on camera :)
When everyone had gone and Grace woke up from her nap, she enjoyed playing with her goodie bag and all the balloons in the quiet of her own company.
Mama wanted one good mother-daughter picture but Grace wasn't so thrilled.
Our two-year old was happy to go to sleep after a long, busy, fun birthday. She happily gave Noah some night-night love.
And just as happily crawled into bed for the night.
We know Grace has been going through a tough time adjusting to Noah as a member of our family, so we really wanted this day to be special for her. In hindsight, maybe we had too many people over to celebrate with her, but it was a lovely day overall and I think she felt our love. At least I hope so! We are so proud of our big girl - a beautiful daughter, a great big sister. Happy, happy birthday Gracie!

February 25, 2011 - Cupcakes!

Today is Grace's last day to be 1 and yesterday we (me and Grace) made cupcakes to bring to her class for snack time today. Needless to say, it was the cutest thing ever. And I am proud that I didn't cry at all (neither did Noah!)...but talk to me tomorrow when my baby girl is actually 2!

Grace got to sit in the teacher's chair when her class sang Happy Birthday.
Grace liked it when they clapped for her!
Twelve children, one teacher, four assistants. And the room was quiet as they all drank their juice and ate their cupcakes. Miss Mbata's classroom management of all these little ones never ceases to impress me.
The birthday girl ate almost her whole cupcake (which is a lot for her!).
And like all the other children she cleared her plate and cup.
Nene and Noah were hanging out in the back of the classroom. It was Nene's first time sporting the Bjorn and Noah's second time sleeping through an event at Grace's school!

I can't believe two years have flown by, and I look forward to celebrating our big girl tomorrow.

February 22, 2011 - One Month Old

Noah is one month old today, and what a month it has been! He has been through a lot, namely a serious virus with its corresponding tests and treatment (spinal tap! ouch!) and a high-maintenance sister! But through it all he has remained an extremely sweet, sweet boy. He seems to be in a phase where he eats A LOT for two straight days and then he has two days of mostly sleeping. It is in an interesting pattern and I continue to be fascinated by both the similarities and differences between Noah and Grace's newborn-hood.

He is a handsome little fellow who is more and more a part of our family every day. We can't believe that the last month has already flown by (particularly given how S-L-O-W the last month of my pregnancy felt!), that Kirsten and Hans have already come and gone, that my parents are already here, and that Noah ever wasn't in our lives. We are still adjusting to our new life (read: GRACE is still adjusting to being a big sister...we have great days like yesterday and tough days like today!) but we couldn't be more grateful for it.

The little guy is getting big (check up at the doctor next week; will report new stats then)!
(note for the record: I did intend to take a picture of Noah with his eyes open today but there were few opportunities to do so and Grace seemed to swoop in just at those moments when his eyes were brightest!)

February 22, 2011 - Changing of the Guard

For 32 hours, two of our three sets of parents were with us in Nairobi. My parents arrived late Sunday night and Kirsten and Hans left early this morning, so Kristoffer took Monday off of work and we let Grace play hookey from school to spend the day with her grandparents! It was a great day - we went to the Windsor Country Club for some out-of-city relaxation and a nice lunch. My parents were jet-lagged and Kirsten and Hans were getting sad to leave us, but we all managed to have a great day together.

When your families live on different continents, the opportunities for merging both sides are few and far between; previously our parents had only met at our wedding! Kristoffer and I were almost overcome with emotion as we sat around the table together. We were so grateful to take advantage of the day together and Grace was extremely happy to have so many people who love her all around.

So we had to say goodbye to Kirsten and Hans today - we will all miss them but Grace will especially because they are very important to her and she is very attached to them. Thank you Kirsten and Hans, once again, for everything you did for and with us while you were here. You made our first month as a family of four much easier than it would have been without you and we are so appreciative of your time, energy and cooking/baking!

February 15, 2011 - Sports Day

Today was "Sports Day" at Grace's school, where each class participated in some kind of race for all the parents to watch.

First, there was a small assembly and some singing. You'll notice that Grace is no longer the youngest or smallest in her class anymore. Her class went from 6 kids to 18 kids this term. There are now 2 teachers with 3 or 4 assistants. I thought she might freak out about this change but she seemed to take it in stride and is very friendly with the other children in her class. When she gets to school in the morning, she likes to hug everyone!
This is Grace at the starting line for her class' race. They had to race halfway down the track to pick up a stuffed animal, and then race the rest of the way to their parents. They called it "Little Wild Hunters". You can see from the pictures that Grace was not in a huge rush and made it to me last in her class...but she still finished! As a non-athlete, I was very proud that she still got a medal despite not "winning" the race.
Here the gym teacher is trying to show her how to jump over the hurdles. Minor problem: Grace is still so small that she can't quite get both of her feet off the ground at the same time to officially jump. She does practice a lot and I think she'll get it soon!
Eventually she picked up her lion!
And made it to a proud Mama at the finish line to get her medal! Then Grace and Farmor cheered on her schoolmates in their races...
...and even cheered on Hans when he competed in the "parents race". Since Kristoffer couldn't be there it was a good thing Hans was there to represent our family. Not that he is very competitive or anything (wink wink)...but his team did win :)
It was so great that Farmor and Hans could come to Sports Day at Grace's school! In another week we have our first parent-teacher conference at Grace's school too. Really looking forward to hearing what her teacher has to say!
