March 18, 2011 - Going Green

Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day and everyone but Kristoffer was wearing green (he forgot...and he isn't Irish!). My parents tried to find corned beef to make traditional corned beef and cabbage for dinner, but the butcher said that they don't sell it anymore because demand is so low. Instead we had a delicious beef stew that my mom made - beef, potatoes and carrots are still pretty Irish.

The other exciting part of the day was that Noah really started smiling a lot. He looks so much like Grace did at that age, just bigger! He is also starting to make cooing noises, which is very sweet. What a boy!

March 15, 2011 - Cooling Off

We are back from our weekend at the Indian Ocean Beach Resort on Diani Beach and we had a lovely weekend, even though it was the hottest place I think we have ever been! The hotel had all these little cottages that were individual rooms and we had two right on the beach, like 10 steps away from the sand, literally. The rooms were really quite lovely and big enough that we weren't too cramped with two kids. The hotel's food was just average and the service was not very good (at least not by American standards), but the pools were great and we were extremely happy on the beach. Grace and Noah did pretty well, although Noah definitely doesn't like extreme heat. Grace always takes some time to adjust to a new place so she didn't have the best "eating" weekend, but she really liked being in the water and playing in the sand and she was very cute doing those things. As for me, I got to ride on a camel on the beach with my mom and was also happy to take a short kayak trip in the ocean with Kristoffer. One night we ate the hotel's "exclusive" restaurant (by reservation only), which actually did have pretty good food. Nobody else made a reservation that night so we had a personal waiter and chef and the whole place to ourselves. It was even right next to our room (at the edge of the resort) so we didn't need to go very far. Overall, I am so glad to have swam in the Indian Ocean and seen the sun rise and set there. I am happy that my parents came with us and that Kristoffer and I had a few moments of relaxation as well - although we learned that there is generally nothing relaxing about traveling with two very small ones! Wish us luck on our 6-week adventure coming up in April and May when we all go to Denmark and the US! That aside, here are some highlights from the weekend...

At the airport going to the beach...Grace was very excited about the airplanes!
And some early morning views from our room...
(the benefit of having an early-riser for a child is that you never miss the sun rise and these were amazing!)
Grace learned to "play" UNO while waiting for her food...
And she helped Far dig a big hole in the sand (this was just the beginning)...
Noah was mostly hanging out in his bouncy seat (thank you thank you thank you again to my Aunt Judy!) because it was too hot to be held that much. This might have been the last time he wore clothes because really he was so uncomfortable in the heat and we started keeping him in just a diaper or very light receiving blanket.
This was the "exclusive" restaurant next to our cottage. As Kristoffer said, people pay a lot of money at home for that kind of service!
An early morning walk on the beach...
Grace, in the early morning light...
Women selling scarves on the beach, although we were grateful that there were few "beach boys" or others harrassing us...
Camel Ride 2011: the negotiations...
Camel Ride 2011: the departure...
Camel Ride 2011: the arrival, and Grace liked sitting on the camel!
My mom's camel was 7 years old, named Joy. My camel was 3 years old, named Thomas. It was really fun and gave us a beautiful view! Thanks to our new friend Abdullah for giving us a fair deal.
Noah's 7-week old bath in the sink. Grace had a 6-week old bath in the sink when we took her on safari, so we thought we should do the same with Noah. But he didn't like it as much as she did! He was just too hot!
Can you spot the sand crab? They were fun to chase in the morning!
Oh, the Mueller-Welsien ladies :) Sorry that we didn't get many pictures of my Dad!
It was fun to swim together in the lovely pool. Grace is getting more and more comfortable in the water and practiced her kicking.
Unfortunately, while we had a great plane ride to Diani Beach, going home it was not so. We were on a teeny-tiny 17-seater that was not pressurized. It was full and crowded and SOOOO bleeping hot! We also had to fly from Diani to Mombasa town for a quick stop on our way, which just made the trip very long and even hotter. As Kristoffer says, it was a bit more than we bargained for. Good thing my mom didn't faint, although she was very close.
Now we are back to our regularly-scheduled life. Grace was very happy to be home and we will now enjoy my parents for 2 more weeks before they leave. A few days after they depart, so do we for Noah's first world-tour. Stay tuned :)

March 10, 2011 - Going Coastal

Tomorrow morning we are going to a hotel on Diani Beach (Mombasa) until Monday afternoon. Even though we have lived here for nearly 3 1/2 years, I have never been to the beach. I am DYING to take a dip in the Indian Ocean and watch the sunset from our little cottage. As I told Grace yesterday, even though she will (hopefully) have a lot of fun...this trip is really about ME!

And I discovered tonight that packing to bring two small ones to the beach for 4 days is just about equal to packing to go on home leave for 4-6 weeks! Shouldn't we just need bathing suits for this adventure? And diapers? And sand toys? And mosquito nets for the babies? And bug stuff? And sunblock? And car seats? And snacks? And Noah's can't-live-without bouncy seat? You get the idea.

Keep your fingers crossed that we have a WONDERFUL time on the beach and that nobody comes back with malaria :) Until next week...

March 8, 2011 - Going Gaga for Giraffes

The day after Grace's birthday, we went to visit the Giraffe Center. Grace had been two times before, but of course has no memory of those visits and my parents wanted to see the giraffes again. We thought Grace would love feeding the giraffes and we were right. She especially liked to pick up the pellets of food off of the ground to feed them with Kristoffer. It was really cute. Noah slept through the whole thing, surprise surprise! We also had a wonderful lunch afterwards at a great restaurant called Talisman. It was a lovely day and my mom captured some sweet moments (my belated blog is not a reflection of the day, but of the fact that I just downloaded the pictures from my mom's camera).

March 7, 2011 - Grace's 1st Haircut

It took 2 years and 8 days for the moment to arrive, but yesterday afternoon, Kristoffer, Noah and I took Grace to get her first haircut. We explained everything ahead of time so she was prepared and she recently watched me get my hair cut so she had a visual in her mind of what was going to happen. I think we made a good decision to take her to the lady who cuts Kristoffer's hair and not the lady who cuts my hair (for a variety of reasons...long story there). I wanted to videotape the experience but Noah was a bit fussy at the exact same time so that couldn't really happen. I held Noah and the digital camera, Kristoffer held Grace. She was so brave and didn't cry or squirm at all. The hair lady was extremely sweet as well. Grace might not look thrilled in the pictures, but when we stepped out of the shop she exclaimed, "I'm so pretty!" Granted, she didn't have THAT much hair in the first place, but her mullet was getting pretty crazy in the back and we think that by chopping it off we gave it freedom to grow faster (and hopefully curlier!). If I hadn't been somewhat distracted with Noah, I probably would have cried as my daughter's baby hair was cut off. And, yes, I did save that first little curl for her baby book. And yes, okay world, I get it now. She's really not a baby anymore!

March 6, 2011 - "ELMO P"

Grace can officially sing her ABCs in English and I am extremely proud. This video might not be her most accurate version of the song but it is the only one I have managed to capture on video and it might be the cutest anyway. I particularly like that when she gets to "LMNOP" it sounds like "ELMO P" (it is quite appropriate given her love for Elmo). Not bad for a 2-year-old!

March 5, 2011 - Six Weeks Ago

At 20 minutes old, this is not the first video we have of Noah (that was at 1 minute old), but six weeks after his birth it is still my favorite to watch. I love listening to Kristoffer talking to him and to hear the sweet things he tells our son: you are so beautiful, we've been waiting for you for such a long time, I wasn't sure I would get to see you [because of all the complications in the pregnancy], welcome to the world, Noah...welcome to the world.

March 4, 2011 - Baby Love

Today Kristoffer and I witnessed the greatest moment we've had since Noah was born. Noah was lying on his stomach and, completely on her own without any prompting or encouragement, Grace randomly walked over, lay down next to him, and gave him a hug. "Big hug to Noah," she said, as she was lying there with him.

My heart was instantly a puddle of love watching my two babies. Nobody was crying. Grace was not banging her head against a wall or biting her fingernails. Nobody wanted my attention or to be held. And then I could see it, for just a moment, that the two of them really will be best friends some day. I could see it so clearly and was completely happy about having two children so close in age.

Thank you, Grace and Noah, for giving us that moment. I am glad I had my camera close by, although it is a picture that my heart will never forget.

March 3, 2011 - An Apple a Day

Grace and Noah had back-to-back doctor's appointments yesterday: a 2 year check up for Grace and a follow-up for Noah from his illness.

Grace did MUCH better than anticipated, given her previous track record of absolutely hating everything about going to the doctor. She only cried when she was weighed and measured and was actually very sweet with Dr. Nesbitt. We discovered that she gained a teeny-tiny amount of weight in the last few months, so now she weighs 9.3 kg (20.5 lbs). Still a petite little thing, but at least she remains in the 25th percentile for her height and the 75th percentile for her head circumference. As the doctor said, it is a relief that developmentally she is doing so great despite her poor weight gain. We are (once again) re-evaluating our strategies to encourage Grace to eat. Otherwise, the doctor thought she seemed very healthy!
We also had Grace's parent-teacher conference last week at school. Ms. Mbata had a lot of nice things to say about Grace. She likes to ride the horse at school on Mondays, she likes to do anything art related and has gotten more involved in their gym class. She is enjoying swimming every week too. The theme with all of these activities is that Grace likes to do things in her own time and doesn't want to be rushed by anyone (no surprise to us). She is ALWAYS singing, according to her teacher, and they even say she provides background music when everyone else is quietly playing. Apparently Grace is pretty discerning about her social life. There are several children that she doesn't seem to like, and some that she does. She has one "best friend", a Kenyan boy named Andrew, who she hugs and holds hands with. He is the only child that she seeks out to play with. Mostly she plays alongside the other children. Ms. Mbata said the things that they are "working on" with Grace are EATING (see above) and joining other children to play with them. Grace knows everyone's name and where their school bags are hung and which shoes belong to which child. So funny! It was really interesting for us to hear another adult's perception of our child when we are not around.

Now on to Noah. At 5 1/2 weeks old, he weighs 4.8 kg (10.5 lbs) which is 50th percentile (he gained 1 kg since his birth weight). He seems so big to us now! He is 55 cm long, which is about an inch longer than when he was born. Dr. Nesbitt is very pleased that Noah made such a full and complete recovery from the virus (or infection) he had a few weeks ago. He got a clean bill of health and goes back in 2 weeks for some vaccinations.
What else is new with our newborn? Well, Noah seems to love being on his stomach. Maybe he would sleep all night that way if we let him (we don't dare) but we're just letting him take supervised naps that way for now. He was given a new play gym (see picture) by some friends and seems to like the music that accompanies it. He wants to be in motion if possible so he loves his bouncy seat (and we do too!) or being in the car. I wouldn't classify him as a colicky baby, but for the last week he definitely has a very fussy period in the evening. He can be comforted for a few minutes here and there and he will eat and burp off and on, but he is also crying and uncomfortable for quite a bit of time (this is when the bouncy seat seems to be the only remedy!). He is starting to smile a tiny bit, he can follow a finger with his eyes, and...are you ready for this?...he can roll over from being on his stomach to his back. Yup. He's done it 4 times (the first two times we thought it was because of a slope in the sofa, but then he did it on a flat hard mattress as well!) and we have all been very impressed.

All in all, not such a bad report on these two little ones.
