A few weeks ago - maybe even a month ago now - we adopted a young African Leopard Tortoise. This species typically lives 80-100 years and he is roughly 2 years old. I wanted to name him "Speedy" because sometimes he is really fast! But Grace and Noah took their father's advice and went for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle name (even though I suppose he is a tortoise toddler)...calling him "Leo" as a nickname for Leonardo.
Leo is a very good "camouflager", as our kids say. He can dig down to sit almost level with the earth, and he covers himself with leaves, dead flowers, etc. It is a new family past time to see who can find Leo first, wherever he is hiding in our garden. Sometimes he is VERY hard to find! Even though he is small, he can climb a bit so sometiems surprises us where he ends up. As far as pets go he's pretty low maintenance since he mostly just eats what's in our garden. We put water out for him (see below) but sometimes he'll go days without having any. I think dehydration is common to the species. We don't have to do anything else, really - he definitely does not want to "play."
But he's a nice little guy to have around; Aya particular loves him and is working on saying both "tortoise" and "Leo". I'm sure whenever it is that we leave Dar we'll easily be able to find a good home for him. Who doesn't want a TMNT?!
One of these rocks is not like the other.
See how speedy he can be!
